Work Placement

Having applied to and endless amount of media companies, one finally decided to meet me and discuss my offer of a six week placement. This company was Red Ink creative, a small web design and build company based in london. Having been impressed by their website and their contacts i decided to email them my C.V. I then followed up the email with a phone call to discuss the offer, ad fortunatley they offered me the oppotunity to come in and see them the following week. I was not quite sure what to expect when going to visit the company, but i was plesantly suprised with the the location and the immediate surroundings. I was then introduced to Steve Merserau and Richard Copestake the co-directors of the company, whereby we proceeding to discuss about my “different” C.V and go into further detail about the course that i take at University. They were extremely welcoming and I felt that we got on well, and therefore that the meeting had gone well, they said they would contact me later in the week with a decision. Later that week i recieved a phone call from Steve confirming that they would like me to start the following Wednesday for the full 6 week period, and i was extremely pleased that the hunt was finally over. I will continue to post info about the placement itself throughout……..

Work Placement

The hunt for the suitable placement is still ongoing. I have established contact with MTV, but the lady that confirms the work placements has just left the company (not a good sign), however she has now replied to my emails and given me the relevant contact details that i need. I have now also email MTV to confirm my 2 week placement will start at the beginning of July. I am eagerly awaiting this opportunity to see the set up of an established media force , and i would like to see how i would fit into their organization. Finding the remaining 4 weeks is however becoming a little more troublesome. I have verbally offered a placement about a media company in a nearby town to me called chelmsford, but i am endeavoring to find a highly creative media company, and these do not quite fit the bill. E-alpha1 offer web solutions however they seem to be very generic, this would be suitable but i am holding out for a big London agency to give me my break. Having emailed numerous companies i am still waiting for replies from many, but the common response is that they are either too busy, or not taking on work placement students. However i still remain optimistic as Dare Digital were very impressed with the CV that i sent them, but are unable to take on work placements in 2007……..fingers are still crossed however

I have now produced what i feel is a very effective curriculum vitae. I was not initially happy with my first attempt, so i decided to remodel the previous attempt and add it to one morning. By changing the colour scheme and the design i feel that i have made the CV more appealing as well as improved the aesthetics. By doing this i hope to catch the employers eye when they open the file. Also by publishing the CV in PDF format i am hoping to make my proposition to the company look more professional. I have also tinkered with the covering letter on numerous occasions to ensure that company sees this opportunity as beneficial to both them and I.

Peer Assesment

This is my first post to my blog……but not the last…..Just thought i would express my opinions on the current situation surrounding ‘Peer Assesment’ upon BAIMP. At present students dont seem to be grasping the marking scheme, and seem to be marking a great deal higher than myself. This was brought to my attention when a memeber of our course recieved 87% on the Space project. The marking scheme was clearly detailed before the assesment was undertaken by all the students but this group in particular seem to have ignored it. I feel that with the current trends set with peer assesment that it is degrading the course somewhat as if i was friendly with the group i could potentially recieve 100%…..is this fair????I feel the method of obtaining peer assesment needs to be carefully looked at and altered.

Additionally i also believe that the marking of group projects should also be taliored to the individual to reflect thier grade. Maybe a continually signing off sheet could be introduced to detail which group member completed the task. This comes as i recieved 52% for my game, whereas certain people from other groups did not turn up and still recieved higher marks than me, and their group members worked tirelessly without them. I do not feel that this is fair….

Production Work

Having attended all of the additional workshops with Michael Kneidl i feel that my production work has developed steadily over the year. Having now realised the need for additional research in projects, i often find myself surfing the interent merely looking at asthetically pleasing websites. This has enabled me to incorporate many ideas into my work and establish my own design style. At the start of the second year i did not feel that my flash skills were quite up to scratch…..but looking back at what i learnt from the first year and developing on these skills has given me far greater confidence. I believe that this will stand me in good stead when i am put in the deep end on my placement. Additionally i have been trying to understand Illustrator in my spare time, this has come in useful as we decided to use this software for the ‘space’ project. My skills will only be improved further by dedicating my spare time, and this is what i intend to do.
