On brand- Wally Olins

On brand is very well written and Olins writes about relevant areas of interest in wonderfully clear English. I found that i was easily able to follow the intended message behind each chapter, and found each very useful.
Olins highlights corporate incompetence and this is in direct contrast to the viewpoints of Naomi Klein the author of “No logo”. Their contradictory arguments are obvious, are Olins even mocks her views in particular sections of the book.
The book has helped to to understand the way in which branding is implemented in our society, the possible future developments. Additionally I feel that the book will be extremely beneficial in the development of my dissertation, as i would not be able to talk the rise of alternative advertising and not mention brand or branding in some way or another.

Here are a few of my favourite quotes:

“brand represents clarity, reassurance, consistency, status, membership-everything that enables human beings to help themselves. Brand represents identity.”
(2003, 23)

“Why do brands penetrate the entire world regardless of every other defining factor- nation, religion, social or economic grouping, culture?”
(2003, 27)

“…brand are nothing like as powerful as they look. They are particularly vulnerable to us, the customers. When we like them we buy them. When we don’t we walk off.”
(2003, 220)

“As in many aspects of branding perception will matter more than reality.”
(2003, 147)

“Brands have two roles- persuading outsiders to buy and insiders to believe.”
(2003, 189)

“Advertising no longer dominates in the way it once did.”
(2003, 193)

Ok, so I am back in Braintree, Essex (Home) and today I have sat down for the first time and attempted to begin my dissertation. I feel that i have a decent question to work from, but i cant help but feel that i should have had another meeting with Joe before we broke up for Xmas. I feel that this would have given me better direction as to where my dissertation is heading, and also help me to confirm the chapter headings. However I have begun writing the Dissertation anyway as it needs to be done after all, and i have been pleasantly surprised with my progress. The pinboard that i have been using to collect my research quotes has helped me to focus my ideas to great deal better than expected. Additionally i have also heeded Richard Berger advice and purchased a white to structure my argument effectively.

At present I have only begun to introduce my topic and the questions that I endeavor to answer. However I always feel that the introduction and the beginning of an argument is the hardest to write, so i am very happy with my progress.

Also I am currently reading On Brand by Wally Olins with three quarter of the book already read I am finding it very interesting. Firstly I have found out that Baileys Irish cream is not Irish at all, and Dixons don’t use their own brand name for products they use Matsui instead as it sounds Japanese and therefore better…..which I thought was interesting, plus I love random knowledge so I will remember this for the rest of my life.

Also as discussed in our final lecture…..

The chuckle brothers are apparently not brothers, as they were born 3 years apart……..

Thought this might serve as Inspiration for us IMPs…….

Gary Revenson maybe?

Blogger is journalist of the year

December 14th, 2007

Medium, a media magazine in Germany, just named a blogger, Stefan Niggemeier, as journalist — yes, journalist — of the year because of BildBlog, which follows, criticizes, and dogs the huge tabloid newspaper in Germany, Bild. Just to give you a flavor that translates easily, here’s a post about a picture that ran in Bild, supposedly of a Turkish prison cell, when readers noticed the similarity to a picture of a cell at Alcatraz — note that moment of networked media criticism. I don’t know enough about the German media society, but I suspect this award could be as much about antipathy toward Bild as admiration of BildBlog. And I suppose this could only fuel the fires of blogs-v-MSM (which I keep trying to douse). Still, I think it’s a positive sign that a blogger is recognized not only as a journalist but as the journalist of the year.

Adicolor’s Berlin Campaign

Found this whilst researching for my dissertation. Adidas used local graffiti artists in Berlin to seamlessly promote their new customizable range of trainers – adicolor.

After putting up 99.5% white/blank posters in paid-for ad space, local artists began appropriating the space for their own use (and even promotion). Adidas then re-postered the same billboards with die-cut versions of the trainers…

The result? Site-specific ads customized by the target market. Fucking Brilliant
